Though I often feel alien to this world, it is a feeling I fight against and do not encourage. I find this feeling reduces my empathy and compassion and becomes a barrier to love. The sense of otherness is persistant and pervasive however. Perhaps I am at the other side of this blog author's spectrum? Rather than encourage the feeling of alienation, it is a stumbling block to me which I abhor. Being in the world, but not of the world makes for a challenge to narrow distance with others. Is there some scripture upon which this advice is founded?
danlazo replied:
Yes, several. I can post the entire verse here, but it's better if you look them up yourself and read the entire context. I'll just list some of the verses: John 17:15-16 John 15:19 John 8:22-24 John 18:36 Philippians 3:20 1 Peter 2:11-12
danlazo replied:
I think you missed the point of the piece. It's about not following the evil ways of the world, or getting caught up in the human drama. i clearly advise to love and serve people, not to distance yourself from people. I understand why this is a stumbling block for you, but the point was not too separate or alienate from other people. Perhaps this is something for you to pray about.
morpheus replied:
Upon what scripture is it based?
morpheus replied:
Obadiah 1:12 tells of the dangers of alienation and separateness leading g to a feeling of superiority and pride. Humility is a constant companion as it is only by His grace that we can do good. In our Lord's instruction on prayer we beg forgiveness for our trespasses as we forgive others of theirs. All the world of creation comes from Him, to alienate yourself from His creation is to turn away from His work. It is only by His grace we may find truth and purity.
morpheus replied:
Jesus's prayer in John which inspires the blog post seems to counsel o one's rather than alienation. Jesus and the father are one and He prays this oneness extends to His disciples and from them to all others. Perhaps the message of the blog is meant to suggest this oneness as the goal. To be one with the Father, and serve His will? To bring this fellowship into the world. Just as sometimes a step back is needed before seeing the path to walk forward I am not an alien from another planet, so imagining this fiction does not serve to bring me closer to truthfulness, but I can see how such imaginings might be temporarilyuseful to someone suffering from hateful treatments to provide a thicker skin, and give a brief respite until His grace bolsters our faith to withstand the injustices of the world. It is not a practice I can endorse, but if it is helpful for your path to serve Him, then may it serve you well.
danlazo replied:
The message is the blog is simply about not following the ways of the world, not separating ourselves from the world. It clearly states that we should be physically and spiritually present in the world and serve those around us, with love and compassion. But we are not to identify with the world. We're talking about two different things. Go in peace.
morpheus replied:
Thank you for this blessing, and your kind advice. We do talk about different things, even though we work to express and study the same word of God. We suffer through the sieve of language and experience which distort the purity and truth of His word. Thank you also for your gift of prayer encouragements which help to break the blindness of these limitations which seperate us in our understanding of his word. Your offering of the scriptures the writings worked to express was the deepest blessing as it showed the truth within the blog post. The one law of God, and the lesser ways of humans is almost an alien world. Jesus's oneness with the Father, and His welcoming us to be in oneness with Him. In a way this division between God and man which was resolved by His coming forms two legal systems which are not in alignment, even as our own perspectives as humans are not in alignment. We seek as humans to find and follow His one law, and to bring the laws by which we govern our behaviors in the daily life into alignment with it. To find the unifying truth within the two which do not agree, and reduce our understanding to His one law and be obedient to that yet within the structure of our human limits might be something like an alien in human skin. Those verses you shared let me see the parable crafted in that blog post as a way that may be useful for teaching many people a path towards His plan for them, there's probably not a parable that can be useful for everyone except perhaps those from Jesus, band so I pray that your ministry for. Him brings many souls into the fold.
