I do have concerns about how content will be filtered as the network grows. If tips awarded is the only way to discern good posts from the noise, we will eventually drown in people spamming posts hoping to find one that hits a bullseye. This created a flood of bad content with no way to weigh/prioritize it. If I have to think long term, without the tools to correctly filter in content (such as a like button), aside from tip amount, it will be just a sea of random noise with only paid content standing out. Your feed will essentially be hijacked by sponsored or corporate interests who will pay a premium in the competition for people's eyeballs.
But there is a tip button...
I think it does more to get users thinking about how much they actually value the post or comment. It does also generate debate or discussion as well. But the important thing, in my opinion, is that it allow you to choose the value of your 'like' instead of there being a flat rate to like. When you like something (in this context), you don't usually get to assign a custom value for how much you like it. This tipping does.
Won’t last it’s incredibly inefficient (using this on iPad)
The tip button is the like button.

Interesting. Most of the tips ive received so far are from comments ive made rather than messages to the feed.

Interesting. So you're incentivized to reply in existing threads instead of creating new redundant thread that clutters people's feeds.

Why do you think that is?
Yes, but only because posts are ordered by "total economy" (which I think it's a term that could be improved but works well enough)
apagut replied:
Turns out they aren't! huh!
