that sounds nice i'd like to not have a problem with how almost everyone in BSV has a different ideological perspective than me the problem for me with just respecting the differences, though, is that there's lots and lots of people loudly angrily saying things about how people like me (leftists, socialists) are irredeemably terrible and saying how we should certainly be excluded entirely from polite society, sometimes explicitly saying that we should suffer and die, and at some point especial

No one really had any doubt that the throughput of Bitcoin could be increased? What? Were you not there? Almost everyone in "crypto" insisted that you couldn't increase the throughput of Bitcoin. They're STILL insisting that now. I had a conversation just this week with someone who smugly informed me that the only reason BSV transaction costs are low is that it isn't used. :/

it's not just some arbitrary marketing narrative that it's the original, that's what it is, it matters that this is the original Bitcoin and that we're preserving it,, Bitcoin is a pretty cool idea, and it would be sad if it just stopped existing

The distinction between personal and private property has nothing to do with the state. The same distinction is made by socialist anarchists. What makes property private rather than personal is that your use of the property affects other people. Like if you claim as your private property the right to fish a fishery, that's not the same as a personal possession, because your use of that property can affect other people's lives and the health of species and ecosystems. People should be allowed to

That was an interesting conversation! It's a total counterpoint to a show I listen to often about the tech industry, Techtonic with Mark Hurst on WFMU. One point that felt crucial to me was about the terms of the exchange not actually being clear-- my strong intuition is that people would be very upset actually by the terms if they understood how much their web activity is being tracked. So I don't think it's fair to portray it as if it's all fine because it's an exchange where both parties bene

and of course there are cheaper ways to send messages to other computers, what makes it worth a whole $0.001 or whatever is the CONSENSUS ON TIMING, that anyone with just the block headers can follow the merkle roots to verify WHEN a piece of data existed .. that's absolutely essential for money, tokens, contracts, gaming, publication, anything where you need to be able to verify the order of when things happened ,, the only other choice is just to trust central authorities not to backdate thing

In practice what happens with "closed" membership groups is usually that there's a single administrator or a small group of administrators who have the authority to add people,,, and they don't have the energy to actually check whether people are serious about the group or to encourage positive participation from them, so they just add pretty much anyone who requests to join,,, and then when that doesn't work any better than an open forum because it's not really a barrier to entry, they impulsiv

I guess one answer is you only NEED to put things on chain when you need a consensus as to their timing. If you need consensus on when a piece of data appeared, you only need to put its hash. But I don't think we're always going to be that conservative, especially since the amount that humans can type is staying steady while the cost of storing and transmitting the things they type is always rapidly decreasing. At some point we're going to say, yes it'd cost a whole $0.00001 to put this on the c

There's more to the system than code. They'd have to also start up some industrial scale servers capable of carrying a heavy chain. There could be people involved with "BTC" that have the capital to start up a real chain, but it wouldn't be an overnight switch flip for sure. Even more difficult than copying the code or building out the infrastructure would be admitting that they'd been wrong the whole time-- difficult psychologically, of course, but also very very difficult in terms of convincin

Um, trick question, they both already collapsed. BTC fell over when it got a mainstream media cycle and anyone tried it out at all. ETH fell over just from cryptokitties. They failed then and they've never recovered. They're still technically running at all but neither of them are currently functioning properly. You can't use them for anything real. They've so completely failed that it's difficult for them to fail more than they already have, they can't go from completely useless to double compl

I guess I don't see how the channels are useful to me. They seem like normal social media stuff that just encourages filter bubbles and other than filter bubbling doesn't do anything to bring signal over the noise, so you just have noise reinforcing particular framings. Moderation only improves the quality theoretically, since actual facilitation is generally too much work for people to bother to volunteer for it for free. What I'd like is groups with defined restricted membership and both an i

None of these three are a functioning Bitcoin. "BTC" is a worthless bubble game, where they have no intention at all of making the Bitcoin system happen (where transactions ramp up to support mining), they're just paying miners with the bootstrap block reward to have a pretend chain for a while because they're selling it to people who have no idea what they're buying while they try to spin up some alternate system to try to sell them. Nothing at all to do with Bitcoin. BCH is a toy project wh

I think the way it has to spread is just people giving their friends a penny. We were doing fine at that, years ago, that's why "Bitcoin" exploded as a meme and everyone's heard of it. Unfortunately there's this bizarre bait-and-switch fake Bitcoin confusing everyone. So we're in this awkward situation where when we try to give people a penny worth to show them how simple it is, they can't tell the difference between that and all the fake useless bullshit chains. It's really off-putting to have

I really think they're not comparable. "BTC" is a fantasy, it's pure fantasy. It doesn't do anything. So regardless of circumstance it can keep doing nothing, and people can keep valuing it doing nothing if they want to, you can't stop them from paying a zillion dollars for a completely useless token that they just like to value, and why try to stop them, let them have their toys. Probably it'll pop at some point, that's what bubbles generally do, but when is unpredictable, and it doesn't really

the number of cases is the number of positives, the percentage is also the number of positives, out of the total number of tests, so if it's 10% and there's 1,000 cases, they did 10,000 tests .. the reason why they give the percentage positive is because it's a reliable indicator of whether there's actually an increase in the number of people infected .. if you measure a zillion more people and get a few more cases but the positivity percentage goes way down, then you were already finding most o

No. It can't work because we still have a free flow of information. If there actually was a value to the content then you could resell it after purchase for nearly as much as you bought it. There's no way to do DRM other than pervasive surveillance of all human activity. People will pay for things behind paywalls but they'll also donate to content creators without even a false threat so that's all that's happening is that people are donating to creators of content they like. You can't actually s

It just needs a media cycle where people say, "wait there are multiple bitcoins???" There's no competition in terms of the features and capacity of the chain, so it's just a matter of getting anyone to notice. That means overcoming the weirdness of the situation-- like, probably nobody's going to spontaneously start reporting on there being multiple Bitcoin chains without some really compelling reason, because the story is convoluted and confusing and bizarre and so they'd have to EXPLAIN to t
